Intern Insider 🎓️: How Nestle & IBM happened for me

1. How did you get internships at Nestle and IBM? How many people you would've reached out to before landing the internship?
The finance internship at Nestlé was through the Nesternship Program conducted in collaboration with Internshala. The application process was gamified and quite simply, there was a short final interview upon selection in the form of a cultural fit test.
The data analytics role at IBM was quite unexpected and occurred naturally. An employee at IBM working on cybersecurity projects reached out to expand their network and found my profile interesting. They told me to seek an internship at IBM or some financial firms as a data analyst and offered to forward my resume to their friends.
Ultimately, things worked out and here we are.
2. What are a few things you wish you would have known before starting internships?
At this moment, I have rejected around 25 internship offers over the past few months for various reasons. These were across different sectors and job roles, but I rejected them simply because they lacked the brand image that I initially sought.
Having perceived large companies and MNCs to be better in terms of learning opportunities would not be my viewpoint now. Despite interning with some startups. I believe the list of companies I didn’t go ahead with would have a few treasure troves of learning and opportunities for development.
Adding a few brand names to your resume is a nice addition, however, long-run benefits can be maximized by exploring less-known opportunities as well.
3. You have done internships at both some well-known organizations and a few startups, what difference did you feel in both cases? Where did you experience that exponential learning curve?
The primary difference lies there in structure and formalities. The structure in well-known organizations is somewhat rigid and leaves little room for flexibility once your role is decided as they usually have specific programs that they offer to all interns.
In a startup setting, the environment is, as described in the textbooks, rapidly changing. While you may be given a specific role, your tasks may span all departments and your work will usually be more interesting.
There is an inherent difference in the way you feel working in both. Large organizations have predetermined systems and they have a limited need for interns and the tasks may not also involve the usage of highly technical skills. In contrast, startup founders will work somewhat in tandem with you while asking for your suggestions and thoughts leading to a meaningful impact in the long run.
